Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rob,
I hope you are doing well. Its been long since we catch up. I got your letter and glad to know that you are planning to apply for Mechanical engineering at Waterloo university.
It is a great decision of choosing mechanical engineering over other courses, because this course cover almost all the concepts that you are going to use in the for your job in future. Moreover, it also gives you a hand on experience which will be beneficial for you in the future jobs.
Waterloo university is well known university. It is ranked in top 10 university in the world and know for its placement. You will be taught by the professors, those are already working in well know fields and received awards in their fields.
If you like to apply to university, there are lot of ways through which you can apply. But I prefer online mode over others, because some time you will get discount on the fee while applying online.
I hope this information might help you.
Let catch up some day and have a cup of tea.
lovingly,
Pankaj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the course, recommending the university, and providing application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when discussing the course, you mention it covers 'all the concepts' but do not specify what those are, and the advice on applying is quite generic. To reach a higher band, provide more specific details about the curriculum or personal experiences to make the advice feel more authentic and helpful.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'But', though these are sometimes used in a slightly mechanical way. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors, which occasionally disrupts the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'mechanical engineering' and 'placement'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'hand on experience' (should be 'hands-on') and 'well know fields' (should be 'well-known'). You rely on basic vocabulary throughout, and there is little attempt to use less common or more precise collocations. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede readability. Examples include 'Its been long since we catch up' (should be 'It has been a long time since we caught up'), 'those are already working' (should be 'who are already working'), and 'some time you will get' (should be 'sometimes you will get'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'at Waterloo university' vs 'at the University of Waterloo') need more attention to ensure accuracy.
