Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Eric,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my advice on the course which I recently completed and also recommend university for doing that course with their application process.

The Master's in AI-ML which I did from UBC is really an advance tech-oriented programme to do. In this course you will develop your understanding about AI-ML models and tools such as Python, Data Structure Algorithms, and R language. Additionally, there will be a series of assignments to do from real-world during your course which will give you a better understanding about the lectures you have learned.

I would recommend the University of British Columbia for this course because they are pioneers in the tech segment. UBC not only falls under the top 100 university in the world but also ranked number 3 for student support and development. As you completed this course, UBC's placement cell will help you from drafting your resume, approaching local start-ups for internship and last but not least UBC’s Alumni club will also help you make a strong professional network in the market. All these factors make UBC a perfect place to start with.

In order to apply for this course, you can go to their official website and then new student page. There you will find a form to fill and few essential documents to submit and after that you will receive an acknowledgement of receiving. In case, if there is any issue with your application, their admission cell will connect you and ask you for further details or documents.

Please let me know if you need any other information or help related to your admission. I will be more than happy to assist you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided specific details about the AI-ML course, offered clear reasons for recommending the university, and outlined the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a helpful and encouraging persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the section on student support and career services, which adds depth to your recommendation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction clearly states the purpose of the letter without minor grammatical awkwardness, such as 'recommend university' which should be 'recommend the university'. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'not only... but also', and 'In order to apply'. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more natural; for instance, the phrase 'As you completed this course' is slightly confusing as the friend has not yet started. Using 'Once you complete this course' would improve the logical flow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'tech-oriented', 'pioneers', 'placement cell', and 'acknowledgement'. There is an attempt to use less common collocations, which is positive. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'advance tech-oriented' (should be 'advanced') and 'start with' (which is slightly vague in this context). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and naturally. Expanding your use of more sophisticated academic or professional collocations would further enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'top 100 university' (should be plural 'universities') and 'few essential documents' (should be 'a few'). Additionally, the sentence 'In case, if there is any issue' is redundant; 'In case there is an issue' or 'If there is an issue' would be more grammatically standard. These errors are non-systematic and do not impede the reader's understanding. You have good control over punctuation and sentence variety.
