Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Eric,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my advice on the course which I recently completed and also recommend a university for doing that course with their application process.

The Master's in AI-ML which I did from UBC is really an advanced tech-oriented programme to do. In this course you will develop your understanding of AI-ML models and tools such as Python, Data Structures and Algorithms, and R language. Additionally, there will be a series of assignments to do from real-world scenarios during your course which will give you a better understanding about the lectures you have learned.

I would recommend the University of British Columbia for this course because they are pioneers in the tech segment. UBC not only falls under the top 100 universities in the world but also ranked number 3 for student support and development. As you complete this course, UBC's placement cell will help you from drafting your resume, approaching local start-ups for internships and last but not least UBC’s Alumni club will also help you make a strong professional network in the market. All these factors make UBC a perfect place to start with.

In order to apply for this course, you can go to their official website and then the new student page. There you will find a form to fill and a few essential documents to submit and after that you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt. In case, if there is any issue with your application, their admission cell will contact you and ask you for further details or documents.

Please let me know if you need any other information or help related to your admission. I will be more than happy to assist you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear details about the Master's in AI-ML, offered a persuasive recommendation for UBC based on specific benefits like student support and networking, and outlined the application process clearly. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a helpful and encouraging persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the prompt in a coherent and structured manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'In order to,' and 'In case,' which help to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the course description, the recommendation, and the application advice is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'tech-oriented programme,' 'real-world scenarios,' 'pioneers,' and 'acknowledgement of receipt.' The language is natural and fits the topic well. While there are no major errors, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than highly sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a friendly letter. Overall, your lexical range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without any significant issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is generally strong. There are minor slips, such as 'recommend a university for doing that course with their application process,' which is slightly awkward, and 'In case, if there is any issue,' where the 'In case' is redundant. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your use of complex structures, such as conditional clauses and relative clauses, shows a good command of English grammar.
