Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rutvik,

I hope you are doing great. I heard about your high score in final year of school exams. I congratulate you for the achievement. I am glad you choose Gujarat university for your future.

I am writing this letter to provide you information about the course that I did. This is a degree level course called Global Business Management of three years. It is divided into six semesters. Last two semesters will be co-op. That means you have to do field job as an intern. You will also get marks in final exams.

I personally recommend this university because every year many Multi National Companies come to this university for placement. If you get good score in your first five semester, you have an opportunity to get placed in your final semester. I found this course very useful for future in business or management fields.

To get admission in the university you can apply online on its official website. If you have scored high in your previous exam then you can apply for scholarship too.

Best wishes

Yours loving

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing course details, explaining why you recommend the university, and offering application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the course is 'Global Business Management', adding more specific details about the curriculum or your personal experience would have made the response more engaging. Similarly, the advice on how to apply is quite brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended rather than just stated, providing a more comprehensive response to the friend's request for advice.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing this letter to', 'That means', and 'To get admission'. While the progression of ideas is clear, the use of linking words is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. Overall, the structure is sound and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'semesters', 'intern', 'placement', and 'scholarship' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'field job' instead of 'work placement' or 'internship'. Additionally, the phrase 'Yours loving' is not a standard closing for a letter to a friend; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best regards' would be more appropriate. To achieve a higher score, try to use more precise collocations and a slightly more sophisticated range of vocabulary to express your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I am glad you choose Gujarat university' should be 'chose' or 'have chosen'. There are also issues with articles, such as 'in final year of school exams' (should be 'in the final year') and 'get good score' (should be 'a good score'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are frequent, non-systematic errors that prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.
