Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Raman

I hope you are doing well! it's been a while since we last spoke. I'm really glad that you are thinking applying same course I studied at university.

First of all, I studied Computer Science at the university for four years. The course covered a wide range of subjects, including networking, coding, programming, and management. I particularly enjoyed the practical classes because we were given real-life management problems to solve in groups. Although there were numerous assignments, workload was manageable.

I would definitely recommend this university because it has experienced teachers and excellent facilities. The lecturers were very supportive and were always willing to help students with their assignments and projects. In addition, the university has a well equipped library and modern classrooms, which made studying much easier.

As for the application, I would suggest checking the university's website carefully and making sure that you meet all the requirements. I would also recommend writing your personnel statement carefully, as it is an important part of your application.

I hope you find this advice helpful. Let me know if you need any further information about the course or university.

Best wishes,

Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear details about the Computer Science course, offered specific reasons for recommending the university (supportive staff and facilities), and gave practical advice regarding the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader receives a comprehensive answer to their request. No parts of the prompt were overlooked, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'As for the application' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is effective and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow between sentences is natural, and the use of referencing is accurate, making the text easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and naturally. Phrases like 'real-life management problems', 'well equipped library', and 'personnel statement' (though note the spelling error 'personnel' instead of 'personal') demonstrate a good command of language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, it stays within a fairly standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations to describe your academic experience and the university environment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'thinking applying' (should be 'thinking of applying') and 'personnel statement' (should be 'personal statement'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is solid, and you demonstrate the ability to use complex structures effectively to explain your thoughts and provide advice.
