Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Anna,

How are you doing and how is mummy and your younger brother Daniel, I have missed you all and I hope all is well. I got your message and I felt really excited to learn that you are considering applying for public health like I did.

I am currently studying public health at the university of Nigeria, it is a 5 years course with 1 year of internship during the 4th year. it has a total of 100 credit unit loads, this means you would have to take 20 credit unit load for each session that's approximately 10 courses for each academic session.

The university of Nigeria is internationally recognized as the best in the country for studying health related courses, I absolutely recommend it. Coupled with their subsidized tuition fee and their hands on experience on research activities. It has also got equipped and sophisticated facilities at the outbreak research center for the identification and treatment of public health diseases.

Applications are open from 9th September until the 30th of October 2026. you will need your Senior secondary school examination results, three passports, two recommendation letters from your high school instructors and finally a letter of motivation not more 400 words explaining why you would love to study public health. I would advice that you submit your applications within the first two weeks as you stand a better chance of getting selected as an apply applicant.

I am happy you reached out and I am glad to assist in other ways. I wish you the best of luck my darling friend.

with love,

Ada

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided specific details about the Public Health course, including its duration and structure. You also clearly articulated why you recommend the university, highlighting its reputation and facilities. Finally, you gave practical advice on the application process, including deadlines and required documents. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the information is relevant and well-developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are presented with complete clarity, as some descriptions of the credit system were slightly confusing. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the introduction, the course details, the recommendation, the application advice, and the closing. There is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes basic or repetitive. For example, you rely heavily on simple sentence structures to link ideas. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, which would help the flow of your writing feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'internationally recognized', 'subsidized tuition fee', and 'letter of motivation'. These terms are used accurately and fit the context well. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'apply applicant' (which is redundant) and 'advice' (which should be the verb 'advise'). While you successfully convey your message, incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate your score. Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly without any significant strain on the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several punctuation errors, particularly comma splices in the opening paragraph (e.g., 'How are you doing and how is mummy... I have missed you all'). Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'it has a total of 100 credit unit loads' and 'not more 400 words' (missing 'than'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
