Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Lakshika,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am so happy that you are planning to be enrolled in the same course at the university, this is going to give your career a boom as MBA is demanded by many huge MNC's. when I started studying this subject the school gave me two options either I can pursue it in finance or marketing, so I opted for finance which had 5 subjects each semester.
The reputation of this school is really outstanding due to which when the placement semester will arrive you will be having great companies interviewing you not only the reputation but the teachers are really understanding and brilliant. There is an official website for the university to apply for this course and a scholarship form as well which you will easily as the website is user friendly.I wish you a best of luck for your future plans.
Your's friendly
Abhishek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the course, recommending the university, and providing application advice. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the MBA course and the finance specialization, you could have provided more specific details about the curriculum or your personal experience to make the letter more engaging. The advice on applying is also quite brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more descriptive language and personal insight, which would better satisfy the requirement for a fully developed response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, starting with an introduction, moving through the required points, and ending with a closing. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is compressed into two large blocks, which makes it harder to read. Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For instance, the transition between the course description and the university reputation is abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Regarding the application process') would help improve the flow and logical connection between your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'specialization', 'placement', and 'user-friendly'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'give your career a boom' (which is not standard English) and 'huge MNC's' (where the apostrophe is unnecessary). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic or professional vocabulary and avoid informal or non-standard phrasing. Expanding your range of synonyms will also help you express your ideas with greater sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'I am so happy that you are planning to be enrolled' is slightly unnatural; 'planning to enroll' would be better. There are also punctuation issues, such as the run-on sentence in the second paragraph: '...not only the reputation but the teachers are really understanding and brilliant.' Additionally, 'Your's friendly' is an incorrect closing; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best regards' would be appropriate. Focusing on sentence boundaries and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
