Student answer (Band 6.5)
My dear Sagar,
I received your letter yesterday, and I was over the moon. I am so excited that you showed interest in learning about Punjabi literature. You will have many good opportunities to start with after completing this diploma.
I am glad to share my experience and knowledge with you. I was so fascinated by this subject. I will help you enroll in this course and share my course material with you. I took a postgraduate diploma, and it covered core subjects such as poetry, drama and fiction.
Moreover, there are so many reputable universities these days, but DAV University is the best for students who are interested in literature. This course will cover some trips to historical places in order to give you knowledge about Punjabi culture. You can either apply online or attend in-person orientations to get enrolled in this course. Visit me this weekend; I will help you with all the necessary steps.
I will be waiting for you.
Regards,
Gurmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provided details about the postgraduate diploma in Punjabi literature, explained why DAV University is a strong choice, and offered practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being friendly and supportive. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' regarding the university recommendation—for instance, by mentioning specific faculty expertise or facilities—to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'in order to', which help connect your sentences. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, using phrases like 'over the moon', 'fascinated by', and 'reputable universities'. The language is natural and conveys your message effectively. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve further, try to incorporate more precise academic or descriptive collocations related to university studies, such as 'curriculum', 'academic environment', or 'admission requirements', to show a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. To aim for a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as using conditional sentences (e.g., 'If you decide to apply, I would recommend...') or passive voice constructions to add more variety to your writing style.
