Student answer (Band 6.5)

24/08/2026

Dear Shirley,

I am writing this to inform you about the course that you are planning to take for yourself. I would like to request your efforts in reading this out thoroughly.

I would like to give you the more information of the course as I have already finished the course before. The course consists of 4 semesters altogether with 4 modules in each semester. Furthermore, one of the semesters will have laboratory classes where you will perform live experiments with cultures and enzymes. The prime reason of choosing this university is because they have tie-ups with MNCs and government funded laboratories. This will not only help you in doing internship after last semester but will also assists you in getting the field job opportunities easily.

In order to apply for this course wait until the September intake. Once intake forms go online immediately fill out the form. Once you complete filling the form send them an email on their official address with you reference number and other details. This will enhance your chance to get selected early. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to get in touch via phone call. My cell is [redacted phone].

Yours faithfully,

Foram P

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You provided details about the course structure, explained the benefits of the university, and offered clear, actionable advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, although the opening paragraph is slightly formal. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistent throughout; for example, 'I would like to request your efforts in reading this out thoroughly' sounds a bit stiff for a letter to a friend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In order to', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is sound. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'semesters', 'modules', 'laboratory', and 'internship' correctly. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'give you the more information' (should be 'give you more information') and 'field job opportunities' (which is slightly unnatural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I have already finished the course before' is redundant, and 'assists you in getting' should be 'assist you in getting' to match the modal 'will'. Additionally, 'send them an email on their official address' should be 'to their official address'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage.
