Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Samantha,
I hope your doing great. I am writing this letter in response to your letter for an advice related to the courses I took at my university.
While, coming to Canada my agent had advised me to take course related to my 12th grade stream. I was in commerce stream related to business. I did take business accounting course in Lakehead university located in thunder bay.
The main thing why I did choose this university was as I had heard from numerous individuals that this university is best for my business field. Even after studying here I got so much experience in HR, professional development, economics, accounting and many other subjects. I did even got a job at bank as an accountant.
If you also want to apply for the same courses I had, then you should consult to an agent. They will guide you more and will help you to get registration at same university.
I hope this would help you.
Yours lovingly,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: it describes the course, explains why the university is recommended, and provides advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the university is recommended relies on general statements like 'best for my business field' rather than specific details about the curriculum or campus life. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the response could be improved to reach a higher band by providing more specific examples or personal anecdotes regarding the course experience.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized logically, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the course description to the recommendation and finally to the application advice. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt, such as the shift between the course description and the job outcome. The paragraphing is functional, though the letter could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the flow between ideas and ensure a more natural, cohesive structure throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'business accounting', 'HR', and 'professional development'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in response to your letter for an advice' (should be 'for advice') and 'get registration at same university' (should be 'register at the same university'). To improve, the writer should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Examples include 'I hope your doing great' (should be 'you're'), 'While, coming to Canada' (incorrect punctuation and phrasing), and 'I did even got a job' (incorrect verb tense). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended message. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation, particularly when attempting more complex sentence structures.
