Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I received your email and I am glad you are planning to apply for the same course that I did which is Environmental Management. I'd highly recommend you to apply for this course.
Since you have decided to move forward with environmental field, this course will enhance your level of understanding different aspects of the environment. This course is designed to teach not only theory but also the practical knowledge which includes going outside on the field. Moreover, you'd be collecting different water and soil samples, and analyze those samples through multiple lab procedures which is quite interesting.
One more thing about the university, it is one of the best universities in the city especially for this course because the professors are really friendly and supportive. You will find all the amenities like bathrooms, sports center, cafeteria, library, etc. The bus service is quite reliable and comes every 15 minutes. the university is also not too far from your place which is the plus point.
To apply for this course, you'll have to search it on the university website. If you are still unable to find search it by the fields of study.
Let me know if you have any more questions or any doubts regarding this.
Best wishes,
Utsav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course as Environmental Management, provided relevant reasons for recommending the university, and gave actionable advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the course's practical components like lab work and field trips. To reach a higher band, ensure that all advice is fully clear; for instance, the instruction on how to search for the course on the website is slightly vague and could be more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover' and 'To apply for this course'. However, the transition between the description of the university facilities and the application advice is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing could be improved; for example, the sentence 'If you are still unable to find search it by the fields of study' is grammatically disjointed and lacks a clear link to the previous sentence, which slightly affects the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use topic-specific terms like 'Environmental Management', 'lab procedures', and 'amenities' correctly. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. For example, instead of saying 'the university is also not too far from your place which is the plus point', you could use more sophisticated phrasing such as 'the university's convenient location is a significant advantage'. Your spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, which is positive. However, there are some grammatical slips that occur, such as 'I'd highly recommend you to apply' (should be 'I'd highly recommend that you apply' or 'I'd highly recommend applying') and 'move forward with environmental field' (missing an article: 'the environmental field'). Additionally, the sentence 'If you are still unable to find search it by the fields of study' contains a structural error that makes it difficult to parse. Focusing on article usage and verb patterns will help you achieve a higher score.
