Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sarah,
Hello. How are you? I'm fine here and I hope the same for you. I received your letter asking for a suggestion on the diploma course in Social service worker. Well, let me tell that this will be the best decision you'll make for yourself. At first, when I opted this one, I wasn't sure however, the career growth in this field is immense.
I got my certification from public university of Jammu and I would recommend you to apply to the similar one. The university offers hand on experience in this field job and the placement is, 'icing on the cake.' You will learn a lot of things such as preparing for emergency situation to listening to the stories of the elders.
Furthermore, this course offers a wide range of knowledge of various drugs involved in the treatment of elders, diseases like Dementia, Parkinson's disease and many more. Moreover, this course will provide a career with respectable pay scale. Apart from this, I know how important your grandparents are for you and this course will help you deal with their daily life problems.
Lastly, I have attached the admission form with this letter and fill it out before 29th September on an online portal of the university.
I hope my suggestion helps you in making your decision.
Love,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provided details about the Social Service Worker diploma, explained the benefits of the university (hands-on experience and placement), and gave clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and encouraging persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the advice on how to apply is slightly more detailed, perhaps by mentioning specific documents needed beyond just the admission form.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs covering specific requirements, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. For instance, the second paragraph is quite dense compared to the others. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career growth', 'certification', and 'placement'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'hand on experience' (should be 'hands-on') and 'on an online portal' (should be 'via the online portal'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more idiomatic expressions or precise academic/professional collocations would help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'let me tell that' (missing 'you'), 'opted this one' (should be 'opted for'), and 'apply to the similar one' (should be 'apply to a similar one'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor errors with comma usage. Most sentences are clear, and these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
