Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
I'm glad to know that you are looking to apply for the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management at Cape Breton University.
As I've already completed this course in 2023 from the same university so I would like to give you a brief introduction of the course. It's a two-year diploma course that a business graduate can apply as it has prerequisite of prior knowledge or experience of business field. Course curriculum contains 24 total credits and students are required to complete minimum of 3 credits in each semester. During last semester you'll have a choice to either take part in a cape-stone project or work full time to gain hands on experience in a reputed organization.
I would recommend you taking admission at this university not because it is a public university, but it offers several opportunities to students for getting selected in multinational companies via career fairs. You will definitely be able to secure your dream job as soon as you finish your course.
To apply for admission you must apply online using university website. Try reserving some time to check entry requirements and list of documents prior applying for your selected course as university required two or three academic or professional references to proceed for your admission.
Don't forget to write me back in case you need any help further.
All the best,
Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, explained the benefits of the university, and offered clear steps for the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the information is relevant and well-developed. You maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, ensuring the reader receives a clear and helpful response to their request for advice. The content is well-structured and directly answers the prompt requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use clear paragraph breaks to separate the course details, the recommendation, and the application advice. Cohesive devices such as 'As I've already completed', 'During last semester', and 'To apply for admission' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the letter feels cohesive from beginning to end. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for a formal-informal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'prerequisite of prior knowledge', 'hands on experience', and 'reputed organization' show a good grasp of relevant terminology. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a friendly letter. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. However, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'As I've already completed this course in 2023 from the same university so I would like...' (the 'so' is redundant after 'As') and 'prior applying' (should be 'prior to applying'). Additionally, 'university required' should be 'the university requires'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
