Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Alex,
I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spritis. I received your message regarding course selection at my university.
I know you have completed your grade 12 this year and now you wanted to pursue mechanical engineering at Windsor University. Bachelor of mechanical engineering at Windsor consists of 4 years with 8 semesters. I would strongly recommend you to take this course as soon as possible as you are already late for addmission process.
The main reason behind enrollment in this course is on campus placement after successful completion of your course which will help you tremendously to find your field job. Visit university website www.windsoruniversity.com and register yourself and pay $200 registration fees. Additionally, start gathering all required documents for further process. You will find required documents list on website i mentioned earlier.
I hope you will get your addmission soon and let me know if you need more help regarding your application.
Thank you,
Yours lovingly,
JAY P.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the mechanical engineering course, explained the benefits of the university, and gave clear instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the personal experience of the course to make the advice feel more authentic and detailed, rather than just listing facts. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the greeting to the course details, then to the recommendation, and finally the application steps. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader navigate the text. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited; the transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt. For example, the jump from mentioning the website to the registration fee could be smoother with better linking words. Improving the variety of transition signals would enhance the flow and help you reach a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'enrollment', 'placement', and 'pursue'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'spritis' instead of 'spirits' and 'addmission' instead of 'admission'. Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'radiant health' in an informal letter to a friend, which sounds a bit stiff. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensure you proofread for basic spelling mistakes to avoid distracting the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'I know you have completed your grade 12' should be 'completed grade 12', and 'the website i mentioned' requires a capital 'I'. There are also minor issues with article usage, such as 'on campus placement' which should be 'on-campus placement'. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and punctuation would improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
