Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Maria,

It has been long time since we last talk.

I am vary happy to hear that you are finally made a decision to go to university to study the same course that I just completed.

I am more than happy to help you and provide all the important information from applying to completing this course.

As, you know the course name is Hospitality Management which is almost of 2 years including two breaks, each of 3 weeks. You will also get a chance to attend practical classes in which you will learn how to prepare table for guests before they arrive and how to serve drinks etc.

I would suggest you to choose Vancouver Community College for this program as I am experienced wiith the atmosphere of this institute which is very friendly. Secondly, the fee for the whole course is so affordable as compare to other institutes.

There are two main ways to apply for this, such as calling directly to the reception of the college and they will guide you for next steps and you can also fill an online form through their website and they will assist you.

Feel free to ask any other information.

Take care and stay in touch.

Lots of love

Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Hospitality Management course, explained why you recommend Vancouver Community College, and outlined the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands your advice. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the personal benefits of the course or provide more specific details about the application documents required, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Secondly' and 'also' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother flow between sentences. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'As, you know', you could integrate these clauses more naturally into the flow of your argument to enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully conveying your message. You use topic-specific terms like 'Hospitality Management', 'practical classes', and 'institute'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'almost of 2 years' instead of 'almost 2 years' and 'as compare to' instead of 'compared to'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from appearing more sophisticated. Focusing on common collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'It has been long time' (missing article), 'you are finally made' (incorrect verb form), and 'experienced wiith' (spelling). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma in 'As, you know'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will be key to moving into the higher band categories.
