Student answer (Band 7.5)

Task - 1

Dear Rahul,

Hello! How are you? I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to share my thoughts regarding the advice you asked me when we met recently.

As you know that I have completed my post graduation in Masters of Business Administration (Technology and Innovation) from International Business University, Toronto. It includes various subjects like OB, Financial Analytics, MSM as mandatory subjects. However, I remember you are not from business background, you can also choose Intro to Business as one of your elective subject which will help you to clear your basics.

Furthermore, I strongly believe that you should pursue your studies in the same university as I have experienced the practical approach of their teaching methods instead of just theory. Adding to this, they have the most experienced faculty for all the subjects. They also offer placements after the completion of your graduation which will help you to secure your future.

So, if you are interested to apply for this university, I would recommend you not to waste your time as this course has very limited seats and deadline for applying in this course is 1st of October. You can apply online through their official website and if you need any type of help you are free to ask me anytime. Also, you can use my student id in the recommendation column which will give you 7% discount in admission fees. My student id is PA-23905.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. See you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly described your MBA (Technology and Innovation) course, provided a strong recommendation based on the university's practical teaching approach and faculty, and offered helpful, specific advice on the application process, including a useful tip about the recommendation code. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Adding to this' to link your thoughts. While the transition between the course description and the recommendation could be slightly smoother, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for the context, such as 'mandatory subjects', 'practical approach', and 'elective subject'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'clear your basics' (better: 'grasp the basics') and 'deadline for applying in this course' (better: 'deadline for applying to this course'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully incorporate specific terminology related to university applications, which adds to the natural flow of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'As you know that I have completed' (the 'that' is unnecessary) and 'one of your elective subject' (should be plural: 'subjects'). Additionally, '7% discount in admission fees' would be more naturally phrased as 'a 7% discount on admission fees'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your control over grammar is strong and does not hinder the reader's understanding.
