Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Raj,

I am happy to hear that you are thinking about joining the same program that I have been doing. I am more than happy to assist you with your questions and concerns regarding the course.

This course consists of two in-person lectures per week and one online class. Both are 3 hours in duration. In this subject you will learn about how to use basic mathematics to understand analysis of statistics, which will later help you to persuade your masters program.

I highly recommend this university because it is a multicultural institution, where students are encouraged to participate in different cultural events. Moreover, they organise placement events for students and different groups of companies around the world are involved. You can apply for this program by contacting the student support office or by filling out a form on the website.

I would love to help you out with application process. I am looking forward to seeing you soon and hopefully you will be joining me for the same course.

Love,

Pinku

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the course structure (lectures and content), explained why you recommend the university (multicultural environment and placement opportunities), and gave clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more depth in your explanation of the course content, perhaps by mentioning a specific skill or project that you found particularly rewarding.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. You use transition words such as 'Moreover' and 'This course' to guide the reader through your ideas. The progression of information is clear and easy to follow. However, the cohesion is occasionally a bit mechanical. To improve, you could use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link your sentences more fluidly. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'This course' or 'I highly recommend', you could use more complex linking structures to connect your thoughts within the paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multicultural institution', 'placement events', and 'assist'. The language is natural and appropriate for the context of a letter to a friend. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or less common vocabulary. For instance, instead of 'basic mathematics', you could use 'foundational mathematical concepts'. Expanding your range of collocations will help elevate your writing to a more sophisticated level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your grammar is generally accurate. Most of your sentences are error-free, which makes your writing easy to read. There is a minor error in the phrase 'persuade your masters program', where 'pursue' would be the correct verb. Additionally, 'the application process' is missing a definite article in your final paragraph. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is good, and your punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further enhance your score.
