Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mohit,

I hope you're doing well. I was really happy to hear that you are planning to apply same course at university as I did.

Since my interest was to study regarding computer science, I applied for the 'Web Development' course at university. In this course you get to learn about website design, database management and my favourite part is integrate websites on server.

I strongly recommened this university because this is well-known university in our state. All the professors are very kind and helpful and ready to solve any queries about any topics. In additation, its laboratories has well oraginsed and all equipments are has upgraded version which allow you to implement theory knowledge in real-time projects.

I'd suggest you to check university's website online about what documents you require such as your language result, transcript and check deadline to apply for the course and I'd advice you to apply in advance since all the seats are filling quickly for that particular course.

I hope my advice will help you to study at this university. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best regards,

Axay Nayi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. In the opening, the course details are provided ('Web Development' focusing on website design and database management). The recommendation of the university is explained by pointing out its strong state reputation, helpful professors, and up-to-date laboratory equipment. Finally, practical advice about how to apply is given, including checking the website for required documents and applying in advance due to limited seats. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. Although some points could be expanded with even more personal narrative, all required elements are fully addressed, fitting the criteria well for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing the prompt requirements, and a friendly sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as course details, university recommendations, and application advice. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'Since my interest was', 'In addition, its laboratories', and 'I'd suggest you to'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking phrases would enhance the overall flow and progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying meaning regarding university studies and applications. There are attempts at less common lexical items, such as 'database management', 'real-time projects', and 'transcript'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'planning to apply same course' (missing 'for the'), 'my favourite part is integrate' (should be 'integrating'), and 'its laboratories has well oraginsed' (grammatical and spelling issues). Despite these occasional slips and spelling errors like 'recommened' and 'oraginsed', the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly without impeding the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('Since my interest was to study...', 'which allow you to implement...'). However, grammatical control is inconsistent, resulting in several noticeable errors. Examples include 'apply same course', 'is integrate websites on server' (incorrect verb form and missing article), 'its laboratories has well oraginsed' (incorrect auxiliary verb and spelling), and 'equipments are has upgraded version' (double verbs and incorrect pluralisation of an uncountable noun). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in grammar and word forms prevent the text from reaching a higher band score, although they rarely impede overall communication.
