Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Raj,

I hope you are doing well. I am glad that you want to choose the same course that I did. I am writing this letter to give some advice about this subject.

I have always been interested in computers. That is why I chose Computer Data Science in college. In that subject, I learned how to edit videos and more about professional coding. Moreover, this course is beneficial for any IT job also. This subject also included practical workshops for students.

I particularly enrolled in this university because of the professors. All of them are well-known in this field. Furthermore, all lectures are well prepared, and you can also record them. Therefore, it is more convenient for me.

I suggest that you start your admission process as soon as possible, because the college admissions department takes a lot of time to verify documents. That is why it is essential to do all the process earliest to avoid any delays.

Yours sincerely,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. In the second paragraph, the writer gives clear details of the course taken, mentioning Computer Data Science, video editing, professional coding, and practical workshops. In the third paragraph, the university is recommended with specific reasons, focusing on the quality and reputation of the professors as well as the convenience of lecture recording. Finally, the fourth paragraph provides actionable advice regarding the application process, advising the friend to start early due to potential document verification delays. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, and the prompt's communicative purpose is fully achieved. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended, placing this performance well within the Band 7 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from a friendly opening and course details to reasons for recommendation and practical application advice. Cohesive devices are used adequately and appropriately, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore', which help to link the ideas together. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, breaking the text into readable chunks that mirror the prompt's requirements. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement is coherent. While the cohesive devices are somewhat standard rather than sophisticated, they serve the purpose well, aligning neatly with the descriptors for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'beneficial for any IT job', 'practical workshops', and 'admission process' demonstrate a competent grasp of relevant topic-related terms. There are attempts to use slightly less common lexical items, such as 'convenient', 'verify documents', and 'essential', which are used accurately. Word choice is generally appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter of advice. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the response. While it does not showcase the wide and flexible range of higher bands due to some everyday phrasing, the vocabulary is more than adequate for this task, comfortably earning a Band 6.5 or solid 6.0, which we round to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively. Examples of complex structures include conditional or causal relationships such as 'That is why I chose Computer Data Science in college' and 'I suggest that you start your admission process as soon as possible, because the college admissions department takes a lot of time to verify documents.' Grammatical control is generally good, and punctuation is handled well. There are occasional minor awkwardness issues, but there are no major errors that impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are completely error-free, and the overall control of grammar matches the criteria for Band 6.5, showing a strong command over basic structures and reasonable success with complex ones.
