Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rohini,

I hope you are doing well. I am enthrilled to know that you are looking forward to apply for Personal Support Worker program, the one I did last year. I pursued this program with Toronto University and I would recommend you to go for same course at same university. Talking about course, it's solely about providing compassionate care to elderly people or helping them in daily living activities such as assisting them in toileting, bathing, eating and keeping them sage by avoiding their falls. Above all, providing emotional support to them by listening, recognising, communicating and spending time with them. The duration of course is eight months and classes are undertaken from January every year.

I am recommending you Toronto University out of full confidence and experience I gained over there. The environment of university is highly studious and diverse where students from all over the world get enrollment based on their academic records. As you are living in Toronto, it would be far convenient for you in terms of transportation.

You can apply through University's online application portal by simply submitting the requires documents such as your 12th grade report and english proficiency test document.

I hope this would address your questions appropriately.

Can't wait to see you personally!

Best wishes,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt in a natural and friendly manner suitable for a General Training letter. First, she gives clear details of the Personal Support Worker program, mentioning its eight-month duration and curriculum contents like compassionate care and daily living activities. Second, she explains why she recommends Toronto University, citing its diverse, studious environment and the convenience of its location. Third, she provides relevant application advice, mentioning the online portal and required documents such as the 12th-grade report. The tone is appropriate throughout, and all ideas are relevant and well-developed. Therefore, this performance comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from greeting to course details, university recommendation, application advice, and a warm closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as grouping the course description into its own paragraph and placing the university recommendation in another. Cohesive devices like 'Talking about course,' 'Above all,' and 'As you are living in Toronto' are utilised effectively to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly conversational or mechanical. Paragraphing and referencing are clear, ensuring the reader can follow the letter without difficulty, which aligns well with a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey precise meaning, incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'compassionate care,' 'daily living activities,' 'emotional support,' and 'english proficiency test document.' There are some minor lexical slips and collocation gaps, such as 'enthrill' instead of 'thrilled,' writing 'Toronto University' instead of 'the University of Toronto,' and missing articles like 'The duration of *the* course' and 'get *an* enrollment.' However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and demonstrates an attempt to use less common phrasing, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses such as 'As you are living in Toronto, it would be far convenient for you...' and 'Above all, providing emotional support to them by listening...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'looking forward to apply' instead of 'looking forward to applying,' 'go for same course at same university' missing articles, 'keeping them sage' (typographical error for safe), and 'far convenient' instead of 'much more convenient.' Punctuation is generally fine, and these errors rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical control squarely at Band 6.0.
