Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope you are doing well.

I am just writing a quick note regarding the course that I took at the Punjabi University Patiala. Two years ago, I graduated in Culinary Management to pursue my career in this field. I learned professional culinary skills, leadership, soft skills, financial, and business operations which benefitted me in starting my own business.

I am recommending this university for various reasons. Firstly, it is well-reputated organization in my city which provides valuable knowledge with experienced tutors. Moreover, management of an institute offers various facilities, supports students, resolving issues, and even providing scholarships to brilliant students which proves to be beneficial for them financially.

You can enroll for this program online through their website named 'Punjab University' and select the city Patiala to reserve your spot as soon as possible.

I hope this advice is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information.

Best reagrds,

Raman.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student provides specific details about the course, mentioning 'Culinary Management' at the Punjabi University Patiala and the specific skills learned, such as 'leadership, soft skills, financial, and business operations'. Furthermore, the letter explains recommendations for the university by highlighting its reputation, experienced tutors, and financial support including scholarships. Finally, the response gives clear guidance about how to apply online through their website. The tone is appropriate for writing to a friend, opening with a friendly greeting and closing warmly. All parts of the prompt are well-developed and fulfil the communicative purpose effectively, warranting a solid band score for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. Ideas are grouped sensibly into paragraphs, moving smoothly from the greeting and course details to reasons for recommendation, application advice, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'and' are used appropriately to link ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is handled well, with each paragraph serving a distinct communicative function. Although paragraph transitions could be slightly more varied, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting the flow of information without causing any confusion for the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the context of discussing university courses and business operations, utilising terms such as 'professional culinary skills', 'business operations', and 'scholarships'. There are occasional lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as describing the institution as a 'well-reputated organization' instead of a 'well-reputed organisation' and stating that 'management of an institute offers various facilities, supports students, resolving issues', which breaks parallel structure. Spelling is generally accurate, though minor slips occur in word formation. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended message with reasonable precision, but lacks the flexibility needed for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex sentences include relative and subordinate clauses, such as 'which benefitted me in starting my own business' and 'which proves to be beneficial for them financially'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, particularly in the sentence 'supports students, resolving issues', where the verb forms lack parallelism. Additionally, there is a minor closing typo in 'Best reagrds'. Despite these errors, meaning is never impeded, and communication remains clear throughout the entire letter.
