Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Durva,

I heard that you are applying for a Master's in Public Relations course from University of Mumbai. I am very delighted to know that you are planning to pursue further education at the same university as mine.

Firstly, I would like to tell you that the university is huge and very spacious; there are many activities that you can explore on the campus, additionally the staff is very supportive as well. As for the course, it is really helpful for understanding Public Relations in depth. It gives you both Academic and practical knowledge as well. There will be various projects that will help you build confidence and help you improve your communication skills. While the academics help you understand and improve your writing and reading skills, it also helps you improve your other skills like creative thinking and strategic planning.

You can easily apply on the university website at https://mu.ac.in/. I hope you make the best of this opportunity and I wish you all the best for your further journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, though some parts are developed more fully than others. You clearly mention the Master's in Public Relations course at the University of Mumbai, and you give straightforward advice on how to apply using the official website link. Regarding why you recommend the university, you point out helpful aspects such as the spacious campus, supportive staff, and practical projects. However, these ideas remain somewhat general and could be extended further with specific personal examples or deeper explanations to fully satisfy higher criteria. Overall, your message fulfils the letter-writing purpose well and maintains an appropriate semi-formal tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, body, and sign-off. You make use of basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'additionally', and 'As for the course' to connect your thoughts. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical, particularly in the long second paragraph where several distinct ideas about campus life, academics, and skill development are grouped together. To move up to higher bands, you could organize your points into more distinct paragraphs and use a wider variety of transitional phrases to guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next without clustering too many concepts into a single block of text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms related to education and career development such as 'pursue further education', 'practical knowledge', and 'strategic planning'. You make some successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as writing 'Master's in Public Relations course from University of Mumbai' instead of 'at the University of Mumbai'. These minor lexical slips do not impede communication at all. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater precision in collocation and incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items while maintaining natural control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your structures with sentences like 'While the academics help you understand and improve your writing and reading skills, it also helps you improve your other skills like creative thinking and strategic planning.' There are some minor grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in '...there are many activities that you can explore on the campus, additionally the staff is very supportive as well,' where a semicolon or full stop would be more appropriate. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication. To reach the next level, you should focus on increasing your frequency of error-free complex sentences and refining your punctuation.
