Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the main parts of the prompt by mentioning the Information Technology course, recommending the university, and giving advice about the application process. However, some ideas are limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, the details of the course remain very vague, stating only that technology is demanding globally rather than explaining specific subjects or experiences. Similarly, the advice to apply early lacks concrete procedural steps beyond office hours. The inclusion of irrelevant details, such as mentioning the bar exam for an IT course, also indicates that some parts of the prompt are handled only partially.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits some overall organisation, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the course, the recommendation, and the application advice. However, the logical progression is at times disrupted by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices, such as 'As the time is very fast approaching' and 'University roles is fist come first serve'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics, but referencing is occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to connect ideas across sentences without smooth signposting. To reach the next band, the writer would need to employ smoother and more flexible transitional phrases to link sentences and paragraphs logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'globaly', 'masteral degree', and 'high society families', but these reveal noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, 'masteral' should be 'master's' and 'globaly' contains a spelling error. Furthermore, lexical items like 'high school university' and 'university roles' demonstrate awkward collocation and lexical control. To improve, the writer should focus on accurate word formation and natural collocations suitable for a semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are notable issues with punctuation, articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include commas separating the subject and verb in 'I, am writing you', missing articles in 'study about Information Technolgy', and agreement errors like 'all of the professor' and 'all of the student here are comes'. Attempts at complex structures frequently result in faulty syntax. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over basic and complex grammatical structures and eliminate frequent punctuation and agreement errors.
