Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Emma,

I am thrilled to hear from you that you want to pursue the same course as I did and asked for my advice.

I completed computer science course at Algoma University in Brampton. It was a three year program which had six semesters and required to submit 12 major assignments. It also included 3 months of intership which was arranged by the university for all the students in a local IT organisation and contributed to the final grades.

I would suggest you to enrol in the same university as they have professional staff for teaching students abouts different computer languages and programming. They not only offers hands-on practice on computers but also assist learners step-by-step when introducing a new concept in the classroom. Moreover, the campus is situated in the downtown which makes it accessible from every part of the city through public transportation.

Additionally, you can directly apply to university through its online website. If you require any further assistance you can directly contact the adminstration office by an email mentioned at university's portal.

I hope you find this information useful. Do let me know if you require any further details.

All the best,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly gave details of the course, such as its three-year duration and the inclusion of a three-month internship. You also explained why you recommend Algoma University, highlighting the professional staff and downtown location, and provided advice on how to apply online. Your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout, which represents clear achievement at this level. To move towards higher bands, some of the supporting details could be developed with even greater depth and specificity, ensuring that every explanation is fully expanded without over-generalising.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. You use paragraphing appropriately, dedicating distinct paragraphs to each main point, such as course details, university recommendations, and application instructions. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, using phrases like 'Moreover,' and 'Additionally,' to guide the reader smoothly through the text. However, a few of the referencing links and transitions feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could make the links between paragraphs flow even more naturally without relying heavily on standard sequence markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'pursue', 'hands-on practice', and 'accessible', demonstrating a reasonable range. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as writing 'intership' (internship), 'computer science course' missing an article ('a computer science course'), 'online website' (redundancy), and 'adminstration' (administration) with a spelling error. These minor slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them and incorporating more sophisticated phrasing would elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively, such as in 'which was arranged by the university' and 'which makes it accessible'. There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating good control of basic structures. However, a few grammatical errors persist, such as missing articles ('required to submit' instead of 'required to submit', and 'situated in the downtown' instead of 'situated downtown'), unnecessary preposition insertion ('suggest you to enrol' instead of 'suggest you enrol'), and minor spelling/punctuation oversights. To fully reach the next band, you will need to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate these lingering minor slips.
