Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Emma,

I'm thrilled to hear from you that you want to pursue the same course as mine at university and I would suggest you to do it.

I completed a three-year computer science course at Algoma University in Brampton. It had 6 semesters and 12 major assignments needs to be submitted by all students independently. Along with this I completed an internship program for 3-month at a local IT Organisation which eventually lead me to my first full time job.

I advice you to enrol in the same university as the professionals assist learners in learning different computer languages and programs through hands-on experience. Plus, they also instruct students step-by-step when introducing a new concept. There is a special AI lab for project development and software creation for the university students to enhance their skills. As the campus is situated in downtown, it can be easily accesible from all parts of the city.

So, you can directly apply for this program through university's website. If you require any assistance you can directly contact the adminstration office by an email.

I hope you find this information useful. Do let me know if you require any further details.

All the best,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general task. You clearly provided details of the computer science course you took at Algoma University in Brampton, including its duration and structural features such as semesters and practical assignments. You also explained the reasons for recommending the university, highlighting the supportive professionals, hands-on experience, and dedicated AI lab facilities, alongside helpful guidance on how to apply. While the ideas are relevant and clearly laid out, some points such as the application details are slightly generalized and could benefit from further extension. Your position remains clear throughout the response, creating a friendly and informative tone suitable for writing to a friend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You effectively divide your response into appropriate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect of the task, starting with a friendly greeting, moving through course details and recommendations, and concluding with application steps and a natural sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitions like 'Along with this', 'Plus', and 'So', which help connect your thoughts. Although referencing is mostly clear, a slightly more flexible use of cohesive links could make the flow even smoother. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy for the reader to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message about university studies. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'pursue', 'internship program', and 'hands-on experience', though there are a few word choice and collocation slips, such as writing 'a 3-month' instead of 'a three-month' and confusing 'advice' with the verb 'advise'. Spelling is generally accurate, and occasional vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, you could incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated phrasing and idiomatic language suited to personal correspondence while maintaining strict precision in word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the infinitive error 'would suggest you to do it' instead of 'would suggest that you do it', the subject-verb agreement slip 'assignments needs to be submitted', and a missing article in 'through university's website'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp your meaning easily. A stronger control over articles, prepositions, and verb patterns would elevate your structural accuracy further.
