Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Harsh,

I hope you are doing well. I am glad to hear that you are considering applying for the same course I studied at university. I would be more than happy to share my experience with you.

I studied a Bachelor of commerce in Auditing and Accounting, which was a three year programme covering subjects like accounting, marketing, economics, statistic and business administration. In the final year, we had an opportunity to be a part of internship programme for a registered accounting firm we had learned real world situations.

I would definitely recommend the university because the professors are highly supportive and proficient in their fields. The university also had excellent facilities which are not limited to well equipped library and plenty of opportunities for student to participate in extracurricular activities. In addition, its strong reputation helps to secure stable employment after graduation from the course.

As for application, I will recommend you to carefully go through the university website and making a list of all the required documents before you begin. Make sure your academic transcripts and other certificates are ready. I would also recommend to write a strong personal statement to explain why you want to study the course.

Let me know if you need any help with the application. I would be happy to help you through the process.

Best wishes,

Jack

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe the commerce degree and its subjects, explain the university’s supportive professors, facilities and reputation, and offer practical application advice. The friendly opening and closing also suit the relationship with Harsh, and your recommendation is clear throughout. Details such as the final-year internship and preparing transcripts make the advice relevant. Some points, however, are stated broadly rather than fully developed: for example, you say the university’s reputation helps graduates secure stable employment but do not explain what makes that reputation valuable or give a specific example. Adding one or two personal details about your experience would make the ideas more fully supported and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is organised in a clear sequence, with separate paragraphs for course details, reasons for recommending the university, and application advice. This makes the letter easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “As for application” help signal the progression. The opening and closing also frame the message appropriately. To make the flow more polished, ensure that each sentence connects smoothly to the next: the internship sentence currently combines several ideas without a clear grammatical link. Some transitions, such as “As for application,” are slightly formulaic; a more natural transition would preserve the clear structure while making cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly advice letter, including relevant academic terms such as “accounting,” “economics,” “academic transcripts,” and “personal statement.” Phrases such as “highly supportive” and “strong reputation” communicate your points effectively. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations, including “a part of internship programme,” “real world situations,” and “stable employment after graduation from the course.” “Proficient in their fields” is understandable but less natural in this context than a phrase such as “experienced in their fields.” Greater control of collocation and more precise wording would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural while retaining the friendly tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex sentences, such as “I would definitely recommend the university because…” and “Make sure your academic transcripts and other certificates are ready.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “we had an opportunity to be a part of internship programme … we had learned real world situations,” the article and sentence structure need attention; the second clause also needs a clearer verb pattern. In the application paragraph, “I will recommend you to carefully go through … and making a list” mixes verb forms; use “I recommend that you carefully go through … and make a list.” Check articles and plural forms as well, for example “a three-year programme” and “statistics.” More consistent accuracy in these patterns would strengthen the range already attempted.
