Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Amna,

I hope you are doing well. I am delighted to know that you are considering to apply in the same course which I had studied. I want to give you some useful advice regarding this course.

I took a 2-year course at University of Toronto in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, which deals with the rehabilitation of missing facial and oral stuctures in patients who have congenital and acquired maxillofacial defects. It is a very comprehensive course and the faculty is outstanding in tearms of teaching. The course not only emhasizes on theoretical concepts, but it also provides a hands-on experience of treatment planning and rehabilitation of patients.

I highly recommend to undertake this course at the University of Toronto, as it is the world's best institute for advanced training in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. It provides an excellent opportunity to its students to vist Princess Margarett Cancer Hospital, so that they can clinically learn from the senior consultants who rehabilitate such patients.

I would advise you to apply for a scholarship, as you have an excellent academic record. The scholarship will cover your tuition fees and travel expenses. However, for accommodation you will have to rent an apartment or a dormitory on campus.

I wish you all the very best.

Your friend,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. You describe the two-year Maxillofacial Prosthodontics course and explain its practical and theoretical content, then give clear reasons for recommending the university, including its faculty and clinical exposure at Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital. Your advice about applying for a scholarship is relevant and personalised to Amna’s academic record. These details extend the main ideas, although the application guidance is less developed than the course description and recommendation: you could explain where to find the application requirements, what documents to prepare, or when to apply. The claim that the university is “the world’s best” is also broad; a specific supporting detail would make the recommendation more convincing and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you open by acknowledging your friend’s plans, describe the course, explain why you recommend the university, and finish with application and accommodation advice. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “not only…but also,” “as,” and “However” make relationships between ideas clear. The letter also has an appropriate opening and sign-off. To make the progression even smoother, connect the scholarship advice more explicitly to the application process—for example, by mentioning that Amna should check the scholarship deadline alongside the course deadline. Some transitions are straightforward rather than especially varied, but the organisation remains easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a personal letter about a specialist university course. Terms such as “rehabilitation,” “congenital and acquired defects,” “treatment planning,” and “senior consultants” communicate the subject matter precisely, while “hands-on experience” is an effective natural expression. There are occasional spelling and collocation slips, including “stuctures,” “tearms,” “emhasizes,” and “vist”; these do not prevent understanding but reduce the accuracy and polish of the vocabulary. Some phrasing could also be more idiomatic: “apply in the same course” and “recommend to undertake this course” are awkward combinations. Proofreading spelling and checking common verb–preposition patterns would strengthen the control of this otherwise appropriate range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as the explanation of what the course “deals with” and the clause beginning “so that they can clinically learn.” You also use structures such as “not only…but also” and a conditional-style explanation of what the scholarship covers. A few grammatical patterns remain inaccurate: “considering to apply” should be “considering applying,” and “I highly recommend to undertake” needs a different construction, such as “I highly recommend undertaking.” In “I took a 2-year course at University of Toronto,” the article before the university name is missing. These errors are local and meaning remains clear; more consistent control of verb patterns and articles would improve accuracy.
