Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Cris,

I just received your message about the accountancy course you are looking forward to start.

This course is crucial to understand the basics of finance industry, particularly if you looking forward to do higher studies in Finance. The university offers short to medium term lengths of this course; I was selected in the three months short duration course as I had to plan to start my bachelors as soon as possible.

As you know, I have studient this subject at Punjab University, Lahore. Primarily, I chose this because of universities' proximity to my residence, but later I realised that this university is ranked among the top five universities in this domain of Accountancy in Pakistan. The university offer flexible class schedules which can suit you best, as I know you have been working part time to run your family business.

One area, you have to take care is the timing of admission, as due to limited seats, admission window get close prior than the deadline. University also provides special quotas for students having distinctions in sports activities, therefore, your gold medal in soccer can help you secure the seat.

I am working near the university area, so I would be available at your disposal to visit the campus when you are free.

Yours sincerely,

Muhammad Waqass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, friendly purpose. You describe the accountancy course, explain that Punjab University is highly ranked and offers flexible schedules, and give practical application advice about applying early and using a sports distinction. The personal detail about your friend’s gold medal makes the advice relevant. These ideas are generally extended with reasons, although some details remain broad: for example, “short to medium term lengths” does not clearly explain the course content or structure, and the application process itself is not described beyond timing and quotas. Adding a specific step, such as where to submit documents or how to check eligibility, would make the advice more fully supported and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: course information, reasons for choosing the university, application advice, and a friendly closing offer. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “As you know,” “but later,” and “therefore” show relationships between ideas. This gives the response a coherent arrangement, while some connections are less smooth or precise. For instance, “This course is crucial…” moves abruptly from the opening to a general claim, and “One area, you have to take care is the timing…” is an awkward transition into the application advice. The reference to “this university” is understandable, though repeating the institution’s name or using clearer transitions would make cohesion more natural and flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a personal letter about university study, including relevant terms such as “accountancy,” “flexible class schedules,” “limited seats,” “admission window,” and “special quotas.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally appropriate for a friend. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “looking forward to start,” “short to medium term lengths,” “studient,” and “at your disposal.” “Domain of Accountancy” is also less natural than a more direct phrase such as “field of accountancy.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the vocabulary more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “but,” and “therefore,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely obstruct communication. Examples include the missing subject in “particularly if you looking forward,” the verb-form error in “you are looking forward to start,” and agreement problems in “The university offer” and “admission window get close.” The sentence beginning “One area, you have to take care…” also has an unclear grammatical structure. Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive and gerund patterns, and clause construction. More consistently accurate control of these forms would strengthen the otherwise understandable range of sentence structures.
