Student answer (Band 6.5)

DearJohn,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and brings clarity to you regarding your pending decision of taking admission in the Central University, Brampton.

To begin with, as I had told you in my last letter that i have secured a seat in the Certificate Course in Psychology for the [redacted phone] session in the september intake and it has recently finished and i have received highest grades in the final semester exams. For your reference, the course covered the basics fundamentals of learning about human mind and emotions along with the practical approach to deal with few mental health issues at intial stage.

In reply to your query regarding the University, I would like to inform you that the environment at the University campus is quite interesting and students here, share a close bond with the course tutors. The university is also offering evening classes in few courses including the one I have opted, so it is going to be convenient for you to manage the studies alongside your current job.

Therefore, if you are still interested, you must give it a try and apply for the next session which is going to begin in january, 2027. You may search about the basic details and fee structure on the website of the Psychology Department, as I am not aware about the recent updates or modifications, if any. Kindly go through the online broucher of the University issued in this regard for all the details.

Wishing you luck for your future! Hope to see you soon!

With Love,

Jessica.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a friendly, relevant purpose. You describe the psychology certificate, mention its focus on the human mind and practical mental-health support, recommend the university for its campus environment and evening classes, and advise your friend to check the department website and online brochure. These details make the advice useful. However, some points are less fully developed: the course description is broad, and the application advice mainly directs the reader to information sources rather than explaining practical steps such as checking entry requirements, preparing documents, or submitting an application. The response already shows clear coverage and relevant support; more specific detail across each point would make it more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: course details, reasons for choosing the university, and advice about the next intake. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “To begin with,” “In reply to your query,” and “Therefore” help signal the purpose of each section. The letter also has an appropriate opening and closing. At times, however, the linking feels somewhat formulaic, and some sentences carry several ideas at once, particularly the opening course paragraph. The reference to “the one I have opted” is also not fully clear in context. To strengthen the flow, use more natural transitions, divide dense sentences, and make references to the course and application steps explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “practical approach,” “mental health issues,” “close bond,” and “fee structure.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some more formal expressions when giving advice. However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or inaccurate, such as “taking admission,” “basics fundamentals,” and “at intial stage.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “september,” “january,” and “broucher.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for conventional collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully, especially in phrases describing study and application procedures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “which is going to begin in january, 2027” and a reason clause explaining that evening classes will help your friend manage work and study. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “as I had told you … that i have secured” combines clause patterns awkwardly and shifts tense; “students here, share” has unnecessary punctuation; and “the one I have opted” is missing a suitable complement. Capitalisation of “i” and sentence punctuation also need attention. Review clause construction, tense consistency, articles, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a complete and natural grammatical pattern.
