Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jack,

How are you? Its been a long time that we chatted with each other, honestly, I was quite excited when I saw you letter and astonished that you wanted to study from the same university that I had choosen for my engineering.

As for the courses, I took electronic and communication engineering for my bechlors, because I was very keen towards engineering since my childhood. There were numerous subjects that could help you to ehance your horizons of knowledge. Dispite all subjects, my favourite subjects was digital electronics and data communications.

Lovely Professional University is one of the best university in Punjab for Engineering. I would highly recommend you to reserve your seat here because the professors are very talented, knowledgable and approachable. Also, they are using modren equipments to deliver theirs lectures and have a huge possibility of placement after completing the engineering.

Considering the competition, I would like you to apply through online platform. They have a website which navigate you from start to end. Also, if possible you could visit in-person and fill a adimission form and hold your seat by depositing some fees.

I hope my advice will help you to make your decision and I am happy to assist you for any further information. Message me anytime and plan to meet you soon.

Best of luck,

Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. You identify the course as electronic and communication engineering, explain your recommendation through the professors, equipment and placement prospects, and offer both online and in-person application options. These details make your advice relevant and give the reader a clear basis for deciding. The course description is somewhat general, however: naming a few specific features, such as a typical project or how the subjects support engineering study, would extend it further. The application advice could also be more precise about what documents to prepare or when to apply. Overall, the purpose and position are clear, with relevant supporting points, though some ideas could be developed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: an opening that responds to your friend, a paragraph about the course, a recommendation, and practical application advice before the closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct purposes, and linking phrases such as “As for the courses,” “Also,” and “Considering the competition” signal transitions. The final paragraph also returns naturally to the friendship. Some connections could be smoother: “Considering the competition” does not clearly explain why competition leads to the online application recommendation, and “Despite all subjects” makes the contrast between the course options and your favourite subjects less clear than intended. Clarifying these links and varying transitions would make the otherwise logical progression feel more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to university study and advice, including “approachable,” “digital electronics,” “data communications,” and “placement.” These choices help convey the subject and the university’s advantages. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, for example “choosen,” “bechlors,” “ehance,” “Dispite,” “modren,” and “adimission.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “study from the same university,” “huge possibility of placement,” and “hold your seat.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they make parts of the letter less fluent and idiomatic. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for applying to a course and describing employment prospects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I was quite excited when I saw your letter” and “because I was very keen towards engineering since my childhood.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles and verb forms occur often enough to affect accuracy. For example, “Its been” needs an apostrophe, “my favourite subjects was” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “a website which navigate you” needs a correctly inflected verb. There are also awkward grammatical patterns in “I was keen towards engineering” and “fill a admission form.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, correct agreement, and appropriate articles; this will help your varied ideas read more smoothly.
