Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Cheryl,

How are you doing? I was very pleased with the news you emailed me last Friday on your interest to take the same course I took in the university, and the advice i can give regarding your decision.

To be honest, studing Medical laboratory science in Madonna University was a wonderful experience for me. The university provides a functioning mordenized laboratory that enabled us carry out practical procedures without depending on the theoritical aspect of medical laboratory science.

I would recommend Madonna University because they are keen on providing a good environment conducive for learning, as well as a good displinary committee to uphold high morals for students.

To apply for september intake, I would adive you go to their website at www.Madonna university.ng. this website will provide you with the basic steps that are needed for the application. Please note that there will be no form of payment to the admission is offered.

Ilook forward to hearing from you.

Your faithfully,

Emela.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify Medical Laboratory Science at Madonna University, explain that its laboratory and learning environment influenced your recommendation, and direct Cheryl to the university website to begin applying. The advice is relevant and the friendly letter format is appropriate. However, some points are only briefly developed. For example, the course description mentions practical procedures but gives no detail about what students study or how the course is structured. The recommendation also relies on broad claims about discipline and a good learning environment rather than explaining what made these features valuable to you. Adding one or two specific examples and clearer application steps would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph about the course, a recommendation, application advice, and a closing. This makes the main purpose easy to follow, and phrases such as “To be honest” and “I would recommend” help signal the shift between points. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening sentence combines your reaction to the news with the advice you can give, making the relationship between the ideas unclear. The application paragraph also moves quickly from the website to payment information without explaining the steps in between. Use shorter, more focused sentences and link each piece of advice explicitly to the next to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the subject and purpose, including “practical procedures,” “conducive for learning,” and “application.” These choices show an attempt to use more specific language than basic everyday terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the phrasing less natural, as in “mordenized,” “displinary committee,” and “adive.” Some expressions are also imprecise: “theoretical aspect” does not clearly explain what practical work adds to the course, while “no form of payment to the admission is offered” is difficult to interpret. Check spelling carefully and choose familiar, precise collocations so your meaning is consistently clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a laboratory that enabled us…” and the purpose clause “that are needed for the application.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “enabled us carry out” needs “to carry out,” and “I would advise you go” needs “advise you to go.” The opening sentence is also awkwardly constructed, and “Please note that there will be no form of payment to the admission is offered” contains an unclear clause structure. Review infinitive patterns after verbs such as “enable” and “advise,” and divide long or tangled sentences into clearer units.
