Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Anshu,

It was great to her from you last week! I was happy to learn that you are thinking about applying for the Master in computational science program at Laurentian University. Scince I recently completed this course, I am more than happy to share my experience and give you advice.

The Course is highly practical and theoretical based with some coding. In the first couple of years, you will focus heavily on core programming langauges like Java and Python. What I loved most was the final- year project, where we worked in teams to build a real- world application for the local bussiness.

I highly recommend Laurentian University not just for the academics, but for the overall evnironment. The campus has computer labs that are open 24/7, which is life saver during exam weeks. Additionaly, the university has an outstanding tech career center. And guess what, I got my job offer from that career center.

When it comes to applying, my main advice is to start your application as soon as possible. Make sure to write and coding projects or tech hobbies you have worked on outside of the school. Also double check the deadline for the entry portel, as appling early can increase your chance to get admission.

Let me know if you want any help form me, you can call me any time this weekend to look over your application draft!

Best wishes,

Atharva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you describe the course through its programming focus and team project, explain the university’s facilities and career support, and offer practical application advice. The recommendation is explicit and supported by personal experience, especially your job offer through the career centre. This gives the letter a clear, relevant purpose, and the friendly opening and closing suit the recipient. To make the advice more fully developed, clarify the application process itself—for example, where to submit materials or which documents to prepare. The course description could also be more precise: “the first couple of years” is unclear for a master’s programme, and the reader would benefit from a clearer account of its duration or structure.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter has a clear progression from your response to your friend, to course details, reasons for recommending the university, and application advice. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, while phrases such as “When it comes to applying” signal the shift effectively. The personal detail about receiving a job offer also connects naturally to your recommendation. Overall, the organisation is logical and the tone remains consistent. Some linking is a little abrupt: “And guess what” is conversational but interrupts the more explanatory flow, and “Also double check” could be integrated more smoothly with the preceding advice. A slightly more connected explanation of how the career centre and course experience support your recommendation would make progression even more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly advice letter, including relevant terms such as “core programming languages,” “real-world application,” “computer labs,” and “career centre.” These details make the subject matter clear, and the informal expressions help establish a personal tone. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word choices are noticeable, including “Scince,” “bussiness,” “evnironment,” “entry portel,” and “appling.” Some collocations also need attention: “write and coding projects” does not express the intended advice naturally, and “increase your chance to get admission” is awkward. Proofreading spelling and choosing more precise application-related phrases would improve control and make the vocabulary sound more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “where we worked in teams” and the conditional phrase “as applying early can increase your chance.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your advice. Some grammatical issues remain, however. “It was great to her from you” should be “to hear from you,” while “The Course is highly practical and theoretical based” needs a more accurate structure, such as “The course combines practical and theoretical work.” In “Make sure to write and coding projects,” the verb pattern is faulty; use “list any coding projects.” Review articles and sentence boundaries too, as in “which is life saver” and the comma splice in “Let me know …, you can call me.”
