Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Yash,

I am writing to give you advice about the course that you are thinking to apply. Recently, I recevied your letter saying that you want to apply for the same course which I did. The course is "Mobile Solutions Development". Basically, this course is devided into four semesters. First and second semesters are consist of the application development technologies and mobile security. Similarly, last two semesters cover web applications concepts.

Apart from that, I would highly recommend you to take this course at Waterloo University. Because, they have better facilities for computer education. Moreover, they will also help you for your placement after graduation. In order to apply for this course, you need to visit their website which is www.universityofwaterloo.com and then you need to select course. Besides online, you can also enroll for this course at welcome centre of university.

I hope this will help you to take decision. Let me know if you have any more questions regarding this course.

Best of luck,

Neel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a friendly, appropriate purpose. You identify the course and give useful details about its four semesters, including application development, mobile security and web applications. You also recommend Waterloo University and offer two ways to apply. This covers the task well, while some points remain general or under-developed: the reasons for recommending the university are limited to facilities and placement help, and the application advice does not explain what documents or steps may be needed. The response already shows clear, relevant support for its advice; to make it more complete, add a specific example of the facilities or placement support and give one or two practical application tips.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged clearly: you introduce the purpose, describe the course, explain your recommendation and application advice, then close with an invitation for questions. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “Apart from that,” “Moreover,” and “Besides online” help connect points. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, however, and “Because” begins a sentence that depends on the previous one, making the connection less smooth. You could improve the flow by joining the reason directly to the recommendation and using a more natural transition, such as “I recommend Waterloo because…” Overall, the organisation is clear, with only minor opportunities to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to explain the course and application process, including “application development technologies,” “mobile security,” “web applications” and “placement.” The wording is generally understandable and appropriate for a friendly letter. However, the range is somewhat limited, and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “thinking to apply,” “help you for your placement,” “devided” and “take decision.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they make parts sound less natural. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for course content and application steps would also help you express your advice with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “In order to apply for this course, you need to visit their website…” Meaning remains clear, and the reader can follow the advice without difficulty. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with verb forms and sentence construction: “First and second semesters are consist of” should be “The first and second semesters consist of,” while “Because, they have…” is an incomplete sentence and has unnecessary punctuation. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “take decision” and “apply for the same course that you are thinking to apply.” To improve, check subject–verb patterns and build complete sentences, while retaining the useful variety of structures.
