Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Lia,

Hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter to express my valuable feedback on the Biotechnology course that I did from Harvard University last year.It is an emerging field and widely used everywhere in medical and research.

To begin with, this subject focuses on human science. It includes detail information about how human system works. It encounters the process of genes and how it passes to future generations. This course outlines the casue of any particular disease and how it can be cured.

I did this at Harvard because it is one of the world's leading universities and provides a great scholarship if we had good academic record in high school. Moreover, Harvard university has all the required lab equipments that students need to do proper examination.

This university open seats everyyear in the month of may on their official website for limited time. You can create an account and look for this programme there. Once you click at this programme you will see a green box next to this programme that shows it still has vacancy and you are good to apply.

Hope this information finds you well and feel free to ring me at [redacted phone] if you have any queries.

Yours lovingly,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points in the task: you describe the Biotechnology course, explain why you chose Harvard, and give application instructions. The course content is made relevant through examples such as genes, disease causes and treatment, while the scholarship and laboratory facilities support your recommendation. Your advice to check the university website and look for an available place is practical. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify what the course was like in practice—for example, its duration, teaching format or a specific experience—and make the application steps more reliable and precise. The claim that seats open in May and the green-box vacancy indicator is quite specific, so explain how your friend can confirm these details. The friendly letter purpose remains clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: an opening that establishes its purpose, a paragraph about course content, a recommendation, application guidance, and a friendly closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the different parts, and transitions such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. The sequence of application instructions is also easy to follow. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and the course-description paragraph moves from human science to genes and disease without explicitly showing how these topics fit together. The opening and closing could also connect more naturally to the advice-giving purpose. Use a few more precise links between related ideas, while avoiding unnecessary signposting, to make the progression feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a letter about university study, including relevant terms such as “Biotechnology,” “genes,” “scholarship,” “lab equipment” and “vacancy.” These choices make the subject and application advice understandable, and the tone is generally friendly. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “human science” is vague in this context, “proper examination” does not clearly describe laboratory work, and “express my valuable feedback” sounds overly formal and self-evaluative for a note to a friend. Spelling slips such as “casue” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and a consistent conversational register; for example, describe what students do in the labs rather than using a broad phrase such as “proper examination.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including relative clauses in “a green box … that shows it still has vacancy” and a conditional in “if we had good academic record.” The meaning is generally clear, and the letter includes several complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, tense and sentence boundaries. For example, “It includes detail information” needs an article or plural form, “This university open seats” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “if we had good academic record” needs an article and a more consistent conditional form. There is also a missing space after “last year.” Review these patterns and punctuate sentence boundaries carefully; greater accuracy across the varied structures would make the writing more controlled.
