Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ranveer,

How're you? I've heard a great news that you're applying for the same course as mine (Automotive Technician) at the university (Toronto University) where I'm enrolled. I can provide you some information regarding the program.

Firstly, let's talk about the details, it is mainly based on car repairs. In the initial phase, you'll be taught regarding basic mechanical stuff: oil change and tire change. Nextly, in the upcoming semesters (2nd and 3rd), the level of repairs usually become complicated which includes, the engine work as well as the work on electronic wiring of vehicle. Lastly, in the final semester, you will be trained for the licensed technician.

I suggest you to choose the same university because they have all the latest equipments needed in the modern era: new type of hoists and latest computer programm to diagnose the car. Also, they provide the scholarships to the students who achieve more than 80% in the first year which may make it easy to pay the fee for you as you're an intelligent student.

You can apply for the program on the official website of institute (www.universityoftoronto.com). Moreover, they've mentioned all the documents required for the registration.

I will be happy to assist you more. Let me know if any help needed.

Yours faithfully,

Harshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you describe the course progression from basic maintenance to engine and electrical work, explain the university’s equipment and scholarship advantages, and direct your friend to the application website and document list. The advice is relevant and your friendly relationship is clear. The course details are usefully specific, while the recommendation is supported by practical reasons. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how the course or facilities benefit students’ future training, and give a little more practical application guidance, such as checking deadlines or preparing documents early. Overall, the purpose is clear and the main points are extended, though some support remains general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: an opening, a paragraph on course content, a recommendation, application advice, and a closing. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Nextly,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the course stages, and “Moreover” introduces an additional application detail. Paragraphing is appropriate and the message is easy to navigate. At times, however, the linking feels formulaic, and “Nextly” is not a natural transition. The course paragraph could also connect its stages more smoothly without relying so heavily on numbered sequencing. Use a wider range of natural links and clearer references between ideas to make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the course and give practical reasons for choosing the university, including “mechanical,” “electronic wiring,” “hoists,” and “scholarships.” These terms make the subject matter clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, which limits precision: “a great news,” “Nextly,” “latest equipments,” and “computer programm” are examples. “Basic mechanical stuff” is also too casual for a letter that otherwise gives detailed advice. Aim for more natural combinations and accurate forms, such as “good news,” “equipment,” and “diagnostic software.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and consistently appropriate while retaining the clear, accessible tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, such as the sentence explaining that the later semesters involve repairs “which includes” engine and wiring work, and the sentence linking the scholarship to the cost of fees. The meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, infinitives, and sentence construction: “a great news,” “the level of repairs … become,” and “I suggest you to choose” need correction. The opening “How’re you?” is conversational, but the following sentence would benefit from a more controlled structure. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns after verbs such as “suggest”; improving these areas would make the varied sentence forms more accurate.
