Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I hope this letter finds you well! I have heard that you are plaining to enroll in the bachelor degree in economics at the university of columbia. This course includes "Economics" in major along with computer science and mathematics.I hope this could be a better match with the commerce course that we did at our secondary school. The course includes 4 terms in total which will be completed in 2 years.

The main reason why i recommend you this university is the highly rank students they have. I mean, nearly 50% of total IT workers in our city are freshly pass students from this univercity. That'why you should chose this particular learning institute.

As far as the application process cocerned, you have to go online at www.columbiauni.com to get an application form for the current year, and after finishing the form send it to the economics department. They will get back to you as soon as they receive the application.

Look forward to hear you back soon.

kind regards

Harpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you describe the economics course and its related subjects and duration, give a reason for recommending Columbia, and explain how to obtain and submit an application. The advice is relevant, and the friendly purpose is clear. However, some details are unclear or insufficiently developed. For example, “highly rank students” does not explain what makes the university a strong choice, and the claim about city IT workers does not clearly support studying economics. The course description also leaves the relationship between economics, computer science and mathematics somewhat uncertain. Add a more specific benefit, such as teaching quality or course resources, and make the application steps precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: the course is described first, the recommendation follows, and application advice comes in a separate paragraph. This makes the main points easy to locate, and phrases such as “The main reason” and “As far as the application process…” help signal transitions. To make the progression smoother and more natural, use clearer links between related details and avoid abrupt shifts. For instance, the move from the course’s subjects to its duration could be connected more explicitly, while “I mean” interrupts the explanation of your recommendation. The closing is also very brief; a conventional sign-off and a sentence inviting your friend to ask questions would complete the letter more effectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the task, including “bachelor degree,” “application process,” “application form” and “economics department,” so the reader can understand the subject and practical advice. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, but several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “highly rank students,” “freshly pass students,” “learning institute,” “plaining,” and “univercity.” Some phrases are difficult to interpret, particularly the claim about IT workers. Choose natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the university as “highly ranked” and its graduates as “recent graduates.” A more precise reason for recommending the institution would also demonstrate a broader, more controlled vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “I have heard that…” and the conditional-style advice about applying, and the message remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, articles, agreement and punctuation are noticeable. Examples include “the bachelor degree” (article and noun form), “I recommend you this university” (verb pattern), “Look forward to hear you back” (verb form), and “50% of total IT workers … are freshly pass students” (agreement and sentence construction). Capitalisation and spacing around punctuation also need attention, as in “i mean, nearly.” Review common verb patterns and article use, then proofread each sentence; this would improve accuracy while preserving your clear overall message.
