Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Taran,

I hope you're doing well. I am glad that you're applying for your further study at university and asking my advice.

Recently, I received your letter where you mentioned that you're thinking about enrolling for the same course at university from where I did. I took a computer course from the University Canada West. This is a two years course. Computer course would not only provide you better communication skills but also you would be get a good job in the future.

I highly recommend the University because this university provide several facilities such as high amount of schoolarship and opportunities to take part in festivals and games. Similarly, the staff and mentors are extremely supportive. You would meet with the numerous peers who would come from different culture.

You can easily apply at this university through their online website. They will give you all the details about the course and university and method of the payment.

I hope my advice will help you. If you have any other questions about the course, please let me know I will clear your doubts.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify the course and university, give reasons for recommending it, and explain that applications can be made online. The friendly tone and closing are also appropriate. The course details are quite brief, however: “a computer course” and “two years” do not explain what you studied or what the course involved. Your reasons—scholarships, activities, supportive staff, and meeting students from other cultures—are relevant, but would be more convincing with a specific example or explanation. The application advice is also limited to the website and the information it provides. More practical guidance, such as checking entry requirements or preparing documents, would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, moving from an opening, to course details, reasons for recommending the university, application advice, and a friendly closing. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Similarly” and “I hope” help connect the ideas. The sequence within the recommendation paragraph is understandable, though the points are presented as a list rather than developed into a connected explanation. Some references are also slightly unclear: “this university” follows “University Canada West,” but the repeated use of “university” makes the writing feel less smooth. To strengthen cohesion, use more varied references and connect each reason to how it would benefit your friend.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including relevant terms such as “scholarship,” “supportive,” “opportunities,” and “apply.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “applying for your further study,” “enrolling for the same course,” and “high amount of scholarship” do not sound idiomatic. There are also spelling errors, including “schoolarship,” and some repetition of “course,” “university,” and “details.” Aim to learn common phrases for education and applications, and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would make the letter sound more natural while preserving its friendly tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “not only … but also” and the relative clause “where I did.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “you would be get a good job” has an incorrect verb form, and “this university provide” needs subject–verb agreement. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “Computer course would not only provide you better communication skills.” The final sentence, “please let me know I will clear your doubts,” needs punctuation or a linking word between its clauses. Practise accurate verb patterns and agreement, then proofread sentence boundaries.
