Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are doing well. I heard that you want to join the same course I took, and you need advice about this subject. I am happy to share my experience with you.

As you know, I have a keen interest in computers and IT, so I finished my computer software programme with a grade of A+. This course not only includes the theoretical part but also has in-person training sessions, which will help you to build your skills for the future goals. It is a distinction in four subjects and has two semesters to pass.

I spent almost one year on the university campus, and I learned a lot of things such as discipline, problem-solving skills and different methods of study without academic pressure. Although the rules are strict at this university, the staff of the university is excellent. Teachers help really well with how to achieve goals and be successful in life.

If you want to apply, I would suggest you simply go to the university website, choose your course and pay your fees. You don't have to visit the university, and they can process all your procedures online.

All the best, and let me know if you need any help

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain a friendly, appropriate tone. You describe the computer software programme, mentioning theory, in-person training and two semesters, and you recommend the university by referring to its staff and the skills you gained. The application advice is also clear: use the website and complete the process online. Some details, however, are unclear or not fully developed. For example, “It is a distinction in four subjects” does not explain what this means about the course, and the reasons for recommending the university could be supported with a more specific example. The response already covers the task well overall; clearer course details and more developed reasons would make the advice more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the purpose, describe the course, explain your experience of the university, and finish with application advice and a friendly closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these different points, and links such as “As you know,” “Although,” and “If you want to apply” guide the progression. The overall arrangement is coherent, though a few connections between ideas could be smoother. For instance, “It is a distinction in four subjects and has two semesters to pass” follows the course description but its relationship to the programme is unclear. The closing also shifts abruptly from application instructions to the sign-off. More precise referencing and a smoother transition into the final lines would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter about university study, including relevant terms such as “theoretical part,” “in-person training sessions,” “problem-solving skills,” and “process all your procedures online.” These choices make the subject clear, and the tone is generally suitable for writing to a friend. Some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, such as “build your skills for the future goals,” “learned a lot of things,” and “Teachers help really well.” “It is a distinction in four subjects” is also difficult to interpret. Aim for more natural, specific phrasing—for example, describe the practical skills the course develops and how staff support students. Correct capitalization in “LOvingly” and “MAnisha” would also improve presentation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and accurate, including “I am happy to share my experience with you” and “You don't have to visit the university.” The conditional opening “If you want to apply” and the concessive clause beginning “Although” show some range. Some grammatical issues remain, however. In “which will help you to build your skills for the future goals,” the article and noun phrase need adjustment; “the staff … is excellent” also has a potentially awkward agreement choice depending on whether staff is treated as a group or individuals. The sentence about “a distinction in four subjects” is structurally unclear, and the final sign-off lacks punctuation. Review article use, agreement, and sentence clarity while retaining your varied structures.
