Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Precious,

How are you doing, and how is everyone back home? I hope Bella has gotten her textbooks now because the last time we spoke she told me how important it is for her upcoming exams.

I was so delighted when you told me of your prospects to study mass communication in the university. The course is a very broad one which includes Advertising, Radio and Television, Public relations, News reports , Film making and so on. It is very beneficial because there is no establishment that does not require any of these roles.

My university contributes greatly to excellence because while other schools focus on only one or two section under the course, Mine teaches everything you need to know. They also have a standard radio studio and art space which contains all tools, equipments and materials needed during the duration of study.

You can either apply online or go there physically for admission. If you are going physically, make sure you go along with all necessary documents to avoid delay.

I will be happy to hear from you soon with good news of your acceptance.

Dorcas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains an appropriate, friendly tone. You describe the mass communication course and give relevant examples, including advertising, radio and television, and public relations. You also explain why you recommend the university, particularly its broad coverage and specialist facilities, and provide practical application advice. These details make the response relevant and complete overall. However, some ideas are asserted rather than developed: for example, the claim that every establishment needs these roles is very broad, and the application advice could be more useful if you mentioned checking deadlines or entry requirements. Adding a little specific support would make the advice more convincing and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: a personal opening, details of the course, reasons for recommending the university, application advice, and a closing. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow the letter, and links such as “because” and “If you are going physically” show how ideas relate. The progression is generally easy to understand, though some connections are basic and the opening reference to Bella’s textbooks is not closely linked to the main purpose of the letter. You could make the organisation feel more purposeful by moving more quickly to the course advice and using a few varied transitions to connect the university’s facilities with the benefits they offer students.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly letter about university study, including subject-specific terms such as “mass communication,” “Advertising,” “Public relations,” and “radio studio.” Phrases such as “upcoming exams” and “necessary documents” are also appropriate. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “prospects to study” would be more naturally expressed as “plans to study,” and “contributes greatly to excellence” is vague in this context. There are also errors in forms and collocations, including “equipments” and “art space.” Aim for precise, natural combinations rather than broad claims, and check whether nouns are countable before adding plural endings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. For example, “If you are going physically, make sure you go along with all necessary documents” uses a conditional structure effectively, while the course description includes a relative clause. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “while other schools focus on only one or two section,” the noun should be plural; “Mine teaches” also needs a lowercase pronoun in the middle of a sentence. The comma before the space in “News reports ,” is misplaced, and the opening question would read more naturally as two separate questions. Proofreading agreement, capitalisation, and punctuation would improve accuracy.
