In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people think that in the future, people will spend their holidays in their own country instead of travelling to other countries. I partly agree with this idea because travelling in your own country is cheaper, but many people still like to visit foreign places.

On the one hand, holidays in your own country have many advantages. First, they usually cost less because people do not need to buy expensive flight tickets or apply for a visa. Also, travelling locally is more convenient and saves time. For example, many families choose to visit beaches, mountains, or famous cities in their own country during school holidays. This helps them save money and support local businesses.

On the other hand, many people still want to travel abroad. They enjoy learning about different cultures, trying new food, and visiting famous tourist attractions. For example, some people dream of seeing places like Paris or Japan because they are very different from their own country. If they have enough money, they will continue to travel overseas.

In conclusion, I believe more people may choose holidays in their own country because they are less expensive and easier to plan. However, travelling abroad will still be popular because it gives people new experiences and memories.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by providing a balanced view on domestic versus international travel. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the position is clear, the ideas are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the discussion on why people prefer foreign travel could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis of the psychological or cultural benefits. To reach a higher band, you must expand your supporting points and ensure you meet the minimum word count to allow for a more comprehensive exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' helps to guide the reader through the argument. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes quite simple and mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more fluid. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary such as 'local businesses', 'tourist attractions', and 'foreign places'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common, everyday language. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise or less common lexical items, such as 'domestic tourism', 'cultural immersion', or 'financial constraints', to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate, and the meaning is always clear. You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'If they have enough money, they will continue to travel overseas.' There are very few grammatical errors, which is a strength. To move into the higher bands, you should aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more varied conditional forms, and ensure that your sentence variety is more consistent throughout the essay.
