IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Many people think that in the future, more people will spend their holidays in their own country instead of travelling to other countries. I partly agree with this idea because travelling in your own country is cheaper, but many people still like to visit foreign places.
On the one hand, holidays in your own country have many advantages. First, people can save money because they do not need to buy expensive flight tickets or pay for visas. Second, travelling locally is easier and takes less time. For example, many families visit beaches, mountains, or national parks near their homes during holidays. This is a good way to relax without spending too much money.
On the other hand, many people still want to travel abroad. They enjoy learning about different cultures, trying new food, and seeing famous tourist attractions. For example, some people dream of visiting countries like Japan or France because they want to experience something different. As transport becomes more comfortable, international travel will continue to be popular.
In conclusion, I believe more people may choose holidays in their own country because they are cheaper and more convenient. However, travelling abroad will still be important for people who want new experiences and different cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal position. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat superficial manner. To reach a higher band, you need to expand on your points with more detailed explanations and perhaps a more specific personal example or a broader societal perspective. The conclusion is clear, but the overall brevity prevents a fully developed response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'First', and 'Second' helps guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main viewpoints. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, although the limited length makes the overall structure feel slightly sparse. The transition between paragraphs is smooth and effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'tourist attractions', 'international travel', and 'foreign places'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on fairly simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. For example, instead of 'cheaper', you could use 'cost-effective' or 'economically viable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Many people think that in the future, more people will...' and 'As transport becomes more comfortable, international travel will continue to be popular.' There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The sentences are clear and easy to read. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to show greater flexibility.
