Student answer (Band 6.0)

A higher percentage of people would prefer going on holidays locally than travelling abroad. I agree with this statement because most of the things that make people travel out of their countries are now present at home so why waste all that money booking flights and hotels reservations.

Firstly, holidays are very important for families to unwind and bond. Most people would prefer to do this away from their country in because they believe there are more fun activities to participate in. For instance, People would go to Thailand to ride elephants and go to Canada or the United States for Disney world themed parks. Most countries are beginning to see this as a means to make revenue through Tourism and are making preparations to make these things available at home so that citizens would spend their money within the country instead of using it to prop up the economy of another nation.

Additionally, I believe vacationing your your country helps you see aspects of your cultures and traditions you did not know about. Furthermore, people used to travel out of Nigeria to go to zoos in the past but the Nigeria Government made available zoos and animal reserves in major cities to prevent the travel abroad to see animals.

Ultimately, Tourism has been a way to generate revenue in many African countries and the leaders are doing everything to milk it so that more money can be generated within these countries to help boost the economy. I personally believe this is a good initiative.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your agreement, such as the development of local tourism infrastructure and the cultural benefits of domestic travel. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the transition between the general argument about tourism revenue and the specific example of Nigerian zoos is slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more depth and that the link between the example and the main argument is explicitly stated. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better summarised the main points to reinforce your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Ultimately' to guide the reader. However, some of the transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'make these things available at home'. The use of cohesive devices is adequate but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'tourism', 'revenue', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'prop up the economy' and 'milk it'. These choices are slightly informal or lack the precision expected in a formal essay. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'vacationing your your country' (repetition and preposition error) and 'the Nigeria Government' (should be 'Nigerian'). There are also minor punctuation issues and some awkward sentence constructions. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and proofreading for minor slips will help improve your accuracy.
