Student answer (Band 6.0)

The importance of selecting a destination for holidays has always been debatable and has become more controversial with many people claiming that it is beneficial to go on holiday in their hometown rather than travelling abroad on holidays, while others reject this notion. In my opinion, the former proposition appears to be more rational. This essay will further elaborate on my views in favor of the positive impact of this trend and will lead to a logical conclusion.

Analyzing the statement and explaining further, the first and foremost reason behind this is that while spending holidays in their hometown, they feel nostalgic and they feel connected to their roots. Another main underlying reason stems from the fact that it helps in strengthening the economy of their hometown. Apart from this, their children get to know about their parents' hometown, how they spent their whole childhood and which games they played, about their school and the history of their country.

On the other hand, people love to travel abroad for their holidays as they want to explore more countries, their food and culture. Moreover, some people travel abroad not only for holidays; they also sometimes travel to explore how other countries run their businesses. In this way, they can spend time with their family and also explore the business world.

In conclusion, both sides have their own justification. I firmly believe that the first view is more persuasive because it helps people to connect with their roots and also helps boost their economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'nostalgia' and 'strengthening the economy,' these points are not fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. The counter-argument is presented, but the rebuttal is brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is supported by a concrete example or a more detailed explanation of the 'why' and 'how.' For instance, explaining how domestic tourism specifically boosts local businesses would add depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'first and foremost,' 'another main underlying reason,' and 'on the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proposition,' 'rational,' and 'justification.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'hometown' and 'travel abroad.' There is a lack of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to tourism, economics, and cultural exchange.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical issues, such as the repetitive use of 'they' without clear antecedents in some sentences. You have good control over basic structures, but the range of complex grammatical forms is limited. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of subordinate clauses and ensure that your subject-verb agreement and pronoun references are consistently accurate throughout the text.
