Student answer (Band 6.5)

The importance of selecting a destination for holidays has always been debatable and has become more controversial with many people claiming that it is beneficial to go on holiday in their hometown rather than travelling abroad on holidays, while others reject this notion. In my opinion, the former proposition appears to be more rational. This essay will further elaborate on my views in favor of the positive impact of this trend and will lead to a logical conclusion.

Analyzing the statement and explaining further, the first and foremost reason behind this is that while spending holidays in their hometown, they feel nostalgic and they feel connected to their roots. Another main underlying reason stems from the fact that it helps in strengthening the economy of their hometown, as they contributing directly to the local economy by staying their in hotels, eating in restaurants and purchasing local products. Apart from this, their children get to know about their parents' hometown, how they spent their whole childhood and which games they played, about their school and the history of their country.

On the other hand, people love to travel abroad for their holidays as they want to explore more countries, their food and culture that help to understand other people from different backbround. Moreover, some people travel abroad not only for holidays; they also sometimes travel to explore how other countries run their businesses. In this way, they can spend time with their family and also explore the business world.

In conclusion, both sides have their own justification. I firmly believe that the first view is more persuasive because it helps people to connect with their roots and also helps boost their economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the benefits of domestic tourism—such as emotional connection to roots and economic support—are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about children learning about their parents' history is a good example, but it could have been expanded further to fully explore the long-term cultural impact. The counter-argument is acknowledged, but the response would benefit from more depth in explaining why the domestic option is 'more rational' beyond just the two points mentioned. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'first and foremost', 'another main underlying reason', and 'on the other hand'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. While the progression of ideas is clear, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always precise.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'proposition', 'rational', and 'justification'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'staying their in hotels' (should be 'staying there') and 'different backbround' (spelling error). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to tourism and economics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'as they contributing directly' (should be 'as they contribute'), 'staying their in hotels' (should be 'staying there'), and 'their food and culture that help to understand' (which lacks a clear subject-verb agreement or structure). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of complex sentence construction to achieve a higher score.
