Student answer (Band 6.0)

The importance of selecting a destination for holidays has always been debatable and has become more controversial with many people claiming that it is beneficial to go on holiday in their hometown rather than travelling abroad on holidays, while others reject this notion. In my opinion, the former proposition appears to be more rational. This essay will further elaborate on my views in favor of the positive impact of this trend and will lead to a logical conclusion.

Analyzing the statement and explaining further, the first and foremost reason behind this is that while spending holidays in their hometown, they feel nostalgic and they feel connected to their roots. Another main underlying reason stems from the fact that it helps in strengthening the economy of their hometown, as they contribute directly to the local economy by staying there in hotels, eating in restaurants and purchasing local products. Apart from this, their children get to know about their parents' hometown, how they spent their whole childhood and which games they played, about their school and the history of their country.

On the other hand, people love to travel abroad for their holidays as they want to explore more countries, their food and culture that help to understand other people from different backgrounds. Moreover, some people travel abroad not only for holidays; they also sometimes travel to explore how other countries run their businesses. In this way, they can spend time with their family and also explore the business world.

In conclusion, both sides have their own justification. I firmly believe that the first view is more persuasive because it helps people to connect with their roots and also helps boost their economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position in favor of domestic tourism. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention nostalgia and economic benefits, these points could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. For instance, you could discuss the environmental impact of reduced air travel or the specific types of local industries that benefit. The counter-argument is presented but remains brief. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more thorough exploration of the reasons provided, moving beyond general statements to more detailed explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'first and foremost', 'another main underlying reason', and 'on the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the benefits of domestic travel and the counter-argument could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be strengthened by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'they', 'this') is always unambiguous.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'nostalgic', 'underlying reason', and 'justification'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat simple phrases like 'travel abroad' and 'holidays'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to tourism and economics, such as 'domestic tourism', 'economic stimulation', or 'cultural exchange'. The current range is sufficient for communication but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'staying there in hotels' (which is slightly awkward) and the repetitive use of 'they' without clear antecedents in some instances. You have control over basic grammar, but the range of complex structures is limited. To improve, focus on varying your sentence beginnings and using more advanced grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring that your subject-verb agreement and pronoun references remain accurate throughout the text.
