Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the coming years, it is likely that an increasing number of people will prefer to spend their holidays in their own country rather than travelling overseas. I largely agree with this view because domestic tourism is generally more affordable and convenient, although international travel will continue to attract people who want to experience different cultures.

One major reason why people may choose domestic holidays is the lower cost. Travelling abroad usually involves expensive flights, visas, travel insurance and foreign accommodation, whereas travelling within one's own country can significantly reduce these expenses. For example, an Indian family can visit destinations such as Goa, Kashmir or Rajasthan without spending money on international flights or obtaining visas. As a result, domestic holidays can be particularly attractive to families and people with limited budgets.

Another important factor is convenience. Travelling within one's own country often involves fewer formalities and less preparation. People do not usually need to deal with visa applications, currency exchange or language barriers, and they are more familiar with the local culture and transportation system. Furthermore, improvements in roads, railways and domestic flights are making many destinations easier to access. For instance, India's expanding network of expressways and high-speed trains could encourage people to explore different states instead of travelling abroad.

However, I do not believe that international tourism will disappear. Many people travel overseas because they want to experience unfamiliar cultures, try different cuisines and visit famous landmarks that cannot be found in their own country. For young people in particular, travelling abroad can provide valuable experiences and a broader understanding of the world. Therefore, despite the growing popularity of domestic tourism, international holidays will remain desirable for many travelers.

In conclusion, I agree that more people are likely to holiday within their own country in the future, mainly because domestic travel is cheaper and more convenient. Nevertheless, international tourism will continue to have a place because of people's desire to experience new cultures and environments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding cost and convenience are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of specific Indian destinations and infrastructure improvements. You also provide a balanced view by acknowledging the enduring appeal of international travel, which adds depth to your argument. The ideas are extended and supported logically, meeting the requirements for a high band score by providing a clear, consistent, and well-reasoned perspective on the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of domestic travel and the counter-argument regarding international travel is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas', 'furthermore', 'for instance', and 'nevertheless', which help to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is consistently clear, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'fewer formalities', 'currency exchange', 'language barriers', and 'enduring appeal' show an ability to use less common lexical items appropriately. The word choices are natural and contribute to the clarity of your arguments. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains functional rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced collocations or academic synonyms to further elevate the tone of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although international travel will continue...', 'if the...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. The range of structures is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively.
