Student answer (Band 6.5)

I agree with the idea that individuals will prefer their own country for vacation rather than going abroad due to the financial and safety challenges that it involves. This essay will discuss the reasons for my answer with relevant examples.

Firstly, travelling abroad demands higher financial amounts because of costly airline tickets and also includes accommodation, food and shopping. Although there are travelling companies that offers very reasonable prices for tour packages to various countries but international travel still is not cheap at all. Moreover, with the whole family it can even cost more. However, on the other hand, Staying in the country of residence is far more cheaper. Individuals can save much more on accommodation as they can find cheaper hotels or Airbnb. Additionally, it saves them from spending thousands on tickets and visa fees etc. For example, a tour to Europe will cost more than double due to the visa fee, tickets and highly expensive hotels, as it is a first choice of tourists for vacation.

Secondly, safety is much more important when choosing the destination. Foreign nations, no doubt may offer a high security, but there could be unknown places which could be dangerous. Being foreigners, individuals might not have the full knowledge of laws and regulations that can lead them to unexpected circumstances. On the contrary, home country always feels safe because of the familiarity with the system and places also. Being the residents, they know the rules and challenges that may occur at a particular area.

Moreover, if their is a war or a protest, they may have to quarantine in a foreign country because airways is the most effected in such conditions, while on the other hand, they will be protected in their home country if such things happen.

In the light of all these benefits that their own country offers when choosing for vacation and the challenges that they may face while travelling across the border, It becomes a wise choice for them to choose their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the premise. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas regarding financial costs and safety are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of visa fees and the risks of being unfamiliar with foreign laws. However, some arguments could be further developed; for instance, the point about war or protests is a bit extreme and could be better balanced with more common travel concerns. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'In the light of' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the idea of 'quarantine' and 'airways' in the second body paragraph is slightly confusing, which slightly impacts the clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'tour packages', 'residence', 'regulations', and 'circumstances'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'higher financial amounts' instead of 'higher costs' and 'far more cheaper' (a double comparative error). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more sophisticated or precise vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'travelling companies that offers' (subject-verb agreement), 'far more cheaper' (incorrect comparative structure), 'if their is a war' (homophone error: 'their' instead of 'there'), and 'airways is the most effected' (incorrect word choice: 'affected'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and basic sentence construction would improve the accuracy.
