In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the future, more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country rather than travelling abroad. However, I disagree with the idea that international travel will become less popular because people still want to experience different cultures and travelling overseas is becoming increasingly convenient.

One important reason why people will continue to travel abroad is the opportunity to experience new cultures and lifestyles. Visiting another country allows people to try different foods, learn about local traditions and meet people with different backgrounds. These experiences can broaden their horizons and make their holidays more memorable. For example, a Canadian tourist visiting India can experience its traditional food, festivals and historical places, which would be very different from a holiday in Canada.

Another reason is that international travel is becoming easier and more accessible. People can now compare flight prices, book hotels and plan entire trips online within a few minutes. In addition, many airlines offer competitive prices, making overseas holidays affordable for middle-income families. As a result, people may find it easier to travel internationally than in the past.

Admittedly, domestic holidays have some advantages. They are often cheaper and more convenient because travellers do not need to obtain visas or deal with long international journeys. Nevertheless, these benefits are unlikely to prevent people from wanting to explore foreign destinations.

In conclusion, although domestic tourism will remain popular, I believe international holidays will continue to attract a large number of people because they provide unique cultural experiences and are becoming increasingly accessible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly addressed all parts of the prompt, maintaining a consistent position throughout the essay. Your arguments regarding cultural exposure and the increased accessibility of travel are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the Canadian tourist in India. The essay follows a logical structure, acknowledging the counter-argument regarding domestic tourism before refuting it effectively. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your ideas by discussing the potential impact of environmental concerns or economic shifts on future travel trends, which would add more depth to your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Nevertheless' effectively to link your points. The transition between the counter-argument and your main position is smooth. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty. To improve, ensure that you vary your cohesive devices even more to avoid a slightly formulaic structure, though your current use is already quite effective for a clear and coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'broaden their horizons', 'competitive prices', and 'unique cultural experiences' show a good command of natural collocations. You avoid repetition and use a variety of topic-specific terms. While your vocabulary is sufficient and precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items related to the tourism industry—such as 'globalization', 'budget-conscious', or 'cultural immersion'—would help elevate your score toward the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'Although domestic tourism will remain popular, I believe...'. The sentences are generally error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. There is a high level of control throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with more varied sentence structures, such as using inversion or more complex conditional sentences, to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical flexibility.
