Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely argued that people will not be travelling aboard for a vacation instead they will choose to spend time in their own country. I strongly agree with this statement as travelling domestically is more convenient and cheaper.

One of the reasons why I support this viewpoint is that it contributes to saving money to some extend. This is largely because international trips involve tremendous amount of money for a visa processing, and flight tickets. The budget is usually low compared to an international trip because they don not have to pay extra due to different currency. For instance, people in India preferred to go Goa, and Kerala to avoid complicated visa processing and expensive flight tickets.

Moreover, this type of trend is becoming more popular because it is convenient. People do not required to request a vacation leave from work to travel a long distance. Along with this, there will be no language barrier. Most of the time, people have trouble to express their thoughts. Also, it is easier to find the destinations in the domestic country because most of the time people are familiar with the places. For instance, people from Vancouver may choose to travel Victoria because they are familiar with the transportation system and language. Therefore, I believe that it is more convenient to travel in their own country compared to other country.

To conclude, People are increasingly choosing their own country to spend their holidays rather than going to the international trips because it alleviates the financial strain and improve the quality of travelling.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding cost-effectiveness and convenience are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of travel within India and Canada. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'language barriers' is a bit simplistic and could have been expanded to discuss cultural comfort or ease of navigation more deeply. The conclusion is brief but effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored rather than just stated, providing more depth to the reasoning provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Along with this', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from financial benefits to convenience. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the discussion of visa processing and the mention of currency in the first body paragraph is slightly abrupt. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'visa processing', 'currency', and 'financial strain'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'travelling aboard' (should be 'abroad') and 'to some extend' (should be 'to some extent'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the sophistication or flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding basic spelling errors would significantly improve the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the overall quality. Examples include 'People do not required to request' (should be 'are not required'), 'people in India preferred to go Goa' (should be 'prefer to go to Goa'), and 'compared to other country' (should be 'other countries'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions, as these are recurring issues throughout the text.
