Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been considerable debate about whether people will prefer to visit the national tourist places in holidays over international trips. I strongly agree with this trend. This essay will discuss the main reasons why I hold this view.

The primary reason why I believe that people are more interested in visiting local places is expense. It is very common understanding that travelling abroad is more costly as compare to own country as it requires tourist visa, currency of that particular country and other living cost.

As a result, an individual needs more budget and proper planning even for a single international trip. For example, last year, I went to Punta Cana, a city of Dominical republic from Canada which costs me more than I spent in visiting another province of Canada.

Another significant reason for spending holidays in own country is that it boosts local economy. In addition, when people earn and spend in the same country then it raises GDP of the particular nation. As a result, it will encourage government to focus more for maintaining all the tourist attractions which cultivate more tourists to visit. For instance, last long weekend, I spent in Toronto, Canada with my friends and we all were so shocked with the beauty of it.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that by considering all these reasons such as more expense and boosting local economy, people will more prefer to spend their free time with loved one in their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on financial factors and economic benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the local economy is a bit simplistic and could have been extended with more depth regarding the impact on local infrastructure or cultural preservation. While the task is addressed, the supporting examples, such as the mention of a trip to Toronto, are personal and brief, lacking the analytical depth required for a higher band score. The response is balanced, but the arguments could be more thoroughly explored to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The primary reason', 'As a result', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. While the flow is generally smooth, the logical progression within the second body paragraph could be tighter, as the link between individual spending and government maintenance of tourist attractions is somewhat abrupt. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'cultivate' and 'considerable debate', which show a decent level of control. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and minor collocation errors, such as 'national tourist places' instead of 'domestic tourist destinations' and 'Dominical republic' (spelling error). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the variety of synonyms and refining word choices would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include 'as compare to own country' (should be 'compared to one's own country'), 'other living cost' (should be 'other living costs'), and 'more prefer' (should be 'prefer'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction often feels slightly rigid. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage is recommended.
